Rhodes University Brian Vos Memorial Scholarship

Rhodes University Brian Vos Memorial Scholarship for Philosophy Honours

For: Philosophy Honours

Value: R15 000

The Philosophy Department at Rhodes University is pleased to announce the Brian Vos Memorial Scholarship.  This scholarship will be for the sum of R15, 000. In terms of the donors’ instructions the scholarship will be awarded annually at the discretion of the Department to an outstanding African black student registering for Philosophy Honours. Preference will be given to female students, though male students are also encouraged to apply.

Along with the financial award, we plan to institute a mentorship style support program for the Vos Scholarship recipients.  This support program will be set up with the intention of aiding our scholarship recipients to manage and thrive while engaging in the challenging and rewarding work of an academic Honours degree.

Rhodes Philosophy would like to thank the Vos family for establishing this generous scholarship.  We are excited about any financial support offered to any of our students and are especially enthusiastic in this case as we hope that this scholarship will assist us in making Philosophy—and academia in general—a more inclusive space.

The scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Brian Vos who passed away in 2010 at the age of 32. It aims to promote the intellectual pursuits that Brian was so passionate about, but never had the opportunity to formally pursue. The Scholarship is donated by Brian’s brother, James, who had the opportunity to do postgraduate studies in Philosophy at Rhodes University largely because of the financial assistance and scholarships he received. The Brian Vos Memorial Scholarship, therefore, seeks to provide this opportunity to others and thereby contribute to the continued effort to understand the world we live in, a pursuit that characterised Brian’s life.
