Before accessing the NSFAS Online Application Form however, you will need to create a myNSFAS Account, kindly follow this link to create the account. It will provide you with a platform so you can register and create your profile online.
Applicants should note that after creating your myNSFAS Account, changes can be effected easily, such as a contact change or name change. To do this, log into the myNsfas Account with the details provided when you initially opened the account. Visit your profile and effect the changes required. After this click on ” Update Details” to save your new changes.
This process is relatively straight forward, unlike situations where you will want to change a phone number, in this instance, a pin code is sent to the new telephone number you intend using, once confirmation is through, you are done. This is done only once.
If you are applying for the funding for the first time, you will be required to sign the NSFAS Bursary Agreement form. The process is as simple as clicking on the link that NSFAS will send to your email after you have submitted the application on your account.
Clicking on this link will require you to provide your identification number after which a One Time Pin will be shared on the phone number that you provided on your profile. You will be required to feed the One Time Pin and the other details in the form.
Once you are through, a notification will be sent on your screen to show the Terms and Conditions and that the application has been submitted. This notification means that you have successfully signed the NSFAS Bursary Agreement. If you have not attained the age of 18, your parents or guardian could sign the form for you.

Before proceeding to apply online, students must have the following documents at their disposal.
- Certified copy of ID document /passport of student / mother / father /guardian / wife /husband
- Original / certified copy of pay- slips / pension slip for both parents/guardian /spouse (these should not be older than three (3) months)
- In the case of deceased parents, attach certified death Certificates
- If parents are divorced, attach a copy of the decree of divorce
- If parents / guardian / spouse are self-employed, attach a copy of the latest financial statement
- If parents are unemployed, attach sworn affidavits accompanied by a report from a social worker , religious leader /traditional leader or Council
- An amount for income must be provided on all affidavits
- If parents are separated, attach pay-slips of both and an official letter from the social worker or religious leader confirming the separation
- Certified copy of previous degree or diploma certificate
- If you are currently in in-service training, attach pay – slip or provide the University with proof from your employer stating whether your study leave is paid or unpaid
- ID copies / birth certificates or letters from school of other family members
- Proof of registration for sibling at other tertiary institutions

What is a NSFAS loan?
A NSFAS loan is an award that a student can receive from NSFAS upon applying and qualifying for such loan. This loan has to be repaid with interest (interest of each year is linked to the national inflation rate). A maximum award size is determined for each year by NSFAS. A portion of this award can be converted into a bursary based on academic performance. The size of this bursary is determined by the number of modules which the student has passed. A 100% pass rate will result in a 40% bursary rebate on this NSFAS loan.

You may apply for a NSFAS loan if you are
- a South African student studying at a public South African higher education institution.
- an undergraduate student studying towards a first higher education qualification.
- studying towards a postgraduate qualification which is a requirement to practise in a chosen profession (eg Postgraduate Certificate in Education).
- studying towards any postgraduate qualification except the MBA, the MBL, the DBA or the DBL.
- able to demonstrate potential for academic success and that you are financially needy.

Students have to complete the UWC Financial Aid Application Form to be considered for financial assistance. To qualify, students would have to be academically deserving and financially needy. To qualify academically, students would have to obtain at least a 50% average mark in the previous examination and be promoted to the next year level. The student’s financial need gets determined by applying a NSFAS Means Test.
