UWC Bursaries, Loans and Scholarships 2024-2025
The University of the Western Cape UWC offers a variety of bursaries ,Loans and Scholarships to aid students in realizing their academic dreams and goals. These bursaries are generally aimed at students who demonstrate a potential to achieve academic success in their respective fields of study. It should be noted that these bursaries are not automatically awarded, therefore students will have to apply for them.
University Administered Bursaries and Loans |
UWC administers a number of funds which make bursary awards to full- time students. The awards range from R1 400 to full-cost awards. You should apply for this assistance when you come to campus for registration. The closing date for applications is 1 March every year for new students and 31 October the previous year for senior students. Bursary-Loans from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) are also administered by the University. The amounts of awards vary, but the maximum for 2006 was R32 500. Up to 40% of each loan can be converted into a bursary, depending on the academic success of the student. For example, if an award of R10 000 is allocated to a student registered for 4 modules, then R4 000 (40% of R10 000) will be converted into a non-repayable bursary if the student passes all four modules. Students are expected to pay back the loan only when they find employment.
National and Provincial Bursaries
The national and provincial governments make bursaries available to promising students whom they would like to have working for them after graduation. If you are interested in applying for such a bursary, you should contact the government department concerned in your home province. These bursaries are usually renewable each year on condition that the student is making satisfactory progress. Allocation of bursaries are based on the needs that exist in a specific province.
Bursaries from Companies and Organisations
You should make direct application for these at the addresses supplied in the bursary brochure. Some companies have training schemes rather like those in government departments, and will pay for your studies provided that they have first call on your services when you qualify. It is also common for employers and unions to offer aid to the dependants of their employees or members. Your parents or guardins should ask about such schemes.
