The Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering is one of the departments in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology University of Namibia, Ongwediva. The department aims at graduating creative engineers who can progress in the various fields of Electronics Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering and Computer Engineering.
The Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering offers its students programs which track the developments in various scientific fields. Students can specialize in the areas of Electronics, Telecommunications, and Computer Engineering. The Department offers the following programmes:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering (Honours)
    Almost every area of human activity is affected by Electronics with application including areas such as defence, medical instruments, mobile phones, nanotechnology, radio and satellite communication and robotics. The Electronics engineer would be expected to research, design, develop and test components and systems.
    Careers include telecommunication systems design and applications, microwave Communication, satellite communication, television and radio broadcast, telephone/mobile communication, wireless networking and related service industries.
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (Honours)
    Computers affect most aspects of human life and are the backbone of many networks such as telephone network, the electric power grid, the banking system, most industrial plants etc. Computer engineering deals with creating the hardware, software and networks for these complex systems. The degree of Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (Honours) aims at producing Graduate Engineers with knowledge, technical skills and abilities to work in the field of Computer Engineering and Information Technology, and who can competently work in computer hardware and software design, computer network design, system integration and related service industries. Computer engineers work with the entire system – not only software, but also the hardware. This produces a more integrated design, including the communication between components of the system. Typically a computer engineer is involved with entire applications and end-user requirements, as opposed to just a program. The programme exposes you to the rapid developments in the computer age.
    Careers include Computer engineers are in high demand in both computer hardware and software design, computer network design, system integration and related service industries, firms such as research organizations, consultants, equipment and product manufacturers etc.
  • Bachelor of Science in Telecommunication Engineering (Honours)
    Communicating information at a distance is the major concerned of Telecommunications Engineering. Telecommunications is the most rapidly developing and dynamic field of technology as seen from the deep penetration of internet and wireless communication through mobile phones all over the world. Telecommunications engineers design, develop, test and maintain telecommunications systems.
    Careers include telecommunication systems design and applications, microwave Communication, satellite communication, television and radio broadcast, telephone/mobile communication, wireless networking and related service industries.

The student capabilities are strengthen by the continuous improvement of the Department’s laboratory facilities, industrial attachments and students working on various small projects during their studies. Undergraduate students are required to complete 2 final year project before graduation: one research project and one design project including design and implement of a comprehensive engineering project which must contain new or useful engineering elements to society.
The departmental faculty members are involve in research with diverse scientific interest including: digital integrated circuits, signal processing, digital systems, computer engineering, communications, microwave engineering, neural networks, image processing, Modelling and Simulation of Communication Networks, Electromagnetic pollution, Electromagnetic Environment and Communication Network Electromagnetic Compatibility.
