University of Namibia Industrial Attachment for Engineering Students

Introduction

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Namibia offers B.Sc. (Engineering) degree with specialization in one of the following disciplines:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electronics and Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Mining Engineering

Industrial attachment/internship forms part of the Faculty’s curriculum and it is seen as an integral part, where the students need to use their initiative to translate theories learnt in classrooms and perform assignments in an actual working environment; instill in the students the right kind of work attitudes and professionalism through interaction with people in the organisations, and observation of their future roles in industry; and reduce the on-the-job training requirements so that they can become effective and productive to their respective organizations much sooner than is usual for fresh graduates. Students are required to participate and work as industrial trainees in their chosen disciplines.

Background and Objectives of Industrial Attachment/Internship

Industrial training provides the impetus for the students to comprehend and appreciate real-life working experiences. Students may realise their ambition and ascertain their career path from the experience gained during industrial training.
The attachment provides students the opportunity to meet and network with people in the industry, and the industry the opportunity to identify talents and potential skilled workers.
The objectives of the Industrial Training programme are as follows:

  • To provide an opportunity for students to discover, learn about, and familiarise with industry of their discipline, and with organizations within the industry. Students will acquire interpersonal skills through meeting with professionals in their field of study.
  • To provide an opportunity for students to observe real-life practices and implementation of theoretical lessons and principles. Students will acquire practical skills and experience working on projects and alongside industry experts.
  • To provide the opportunity for the industry to identify potential employees from among the industrial trainees and to feedback comments on the programme. Students will benefit from coursework tailored to meet training expectations of the industry.
  • To ensure coursework and training programmes satisfy the expectations of the industry, and ensure the programmes are relevant and up to date.
  • Overall, students will gain experience in the following:
    • Organisational skills and professional awareness.
    • Ability to work under supervision and directions.
    • Efficiently completing tasks, fostering good relationship with seniors and subordinates.
    • Communication skills and contribution to company.

This programme is compulsory for all students from the second to the fourth year (Industrial Attachment I, II, III):

  • First year students do practical training, Workshop Practice, in our workshops and laboratories.
  • Second year students do Industrial Attachment I, at the level of Artisan Trainees.
  • Third year students do Industrial Attachment II, at the level of Technician Trainees.
  • Fourth year students do Industrial Attachment III, at the level of Engineer Trainees.

Therefore, during Industrial attachments, students should work under the company’s supervision at the level of Artisan Trainees, Technician Trainees, or Engineer Trainees, respectively, to appropriate industries for hand-on practical training.

Industrial Training Assessment:

The industrial training performance assessment is based on:

  • Students’ logbook of daily activities
  • Students’ Industrial Training Final Report
  • Industrial Training Supervisor’s report/Company Feedback Report where the student are attached for training.
  • Industrial Training Lecturers report through visit or survey.

The industrial attachment is normally scheduled for June-July or December-January and should have a minimum of six weeks for all students.
