UNAM Geography, History, Environmental Studies and Tourism Management Department
The Department of Geography, History and Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences builds knowledge in geography, history, tourism and environmental studies. The department teaches subject themes ranging from geography, history, archaeology, tourism, GIS, remote sensing and environmental studies. The department offers two undergraduate programmes in Tourism and Geo-information science.
Furthermore, two subjects in Geography and Environmental Studies and History are also offered at undergraduate level. At postgraduate level, the department offers three programmes. The Postgraduate Diploma in Heritage Conservation and Management which will be introduced in 2015. The Master of Arts and Doctor of philosophy degrees are the high-end research-based postgraduate programmes attracting students from across disciplines held under the umbrella of geography and History.
In terms of facilities the department hosts two Computer Laboratories for Spatial Analysis with installed modern GIS and Remote Sensing software. These facilitate teaching and research in fields of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing. Together with remote sensing, GIS offers students and researchers alike sophisticated tools applied in spatial analysis. By nature, the Laboratories are multi-purpose and trans-faculty component in the department. The Laboratories continues to play a crucial role in the departmental undergraduate and postgraduate education and research as well as in human capacity building programmes as part of the university’s community engagement.
