National Youth Service NYS Requirements 2024-2025

  •   Namibian citizen;
  •   Aged between 16-35 years;
  •  In possesion of a Grade 10 or 12
  •   Youth not currently enrolled at any formal education institution;
  •   Ready to undergo medical fitness test; and
  •   Without Schedule1 criminal record.

Phase one: Civic Training

This is the first phase of training with a duration of six months. It aims to impart to the youth knowledge, constructive attitudes and individual values that help them to become motivated, responsible youth who are able to relate positively to others including those from different cultural backgrounds.

Civic Training is currently conducted at Rietfontein Centre and is offered in partnership with Namibian Defence Force (NDF). During this phase of training the youth undergo training and a variety of modules are covered including:

Namibian Constitution, Vision 2030, NDPs, Drill and Physical Training (PT), First aid and Hygiene, Leadership Training, Recruits Trainees Code of Conduct, Skill at Arms/ Weaponry Skills, GRN Structures, Map Reading and Interpretation, Stress Management, National Youth Service Act, Voice Procedures. In addition to the above mentioned modules, recruits undergo through additional modules offered through Guest Instructors such as:

HIV & AIDS Awareness, Geo Politics, Drug Law enforcement, Explosives, Human Rights, Uniformed Recruitment Policy, Rank Structures (NDF, NAMPOL, NCS), Economic Activities, Violence Against Women and Children. Despite the physical and rigorous nature of this training, the youth have been responding very well to this programme as it forms part of their integral life journey.

 

Phase two: National Voluntary Service

This is the second phase of the programme which has a duration of between six months and two years. Voluntarism promotes values such as a sense of belonging, solidarity, reciprocity, mutual trust, all of which contribute significantly to the youths’ capacity to contribute positively to their communities. During this phase, NYS youth are posted to serve in various projects that are of national importance around the country, providing them an opportunity to take part in national development.

 

Phase three: Skills Training

TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (TVET)
National Youth Service (NYS) offers accredited TVET programs at Rietfontein Centre in Otjozondupa Region. The programs are closely aligned with the labour market, which equitably provides the skills needed for accelerated development and the competencies needed by youth for productive work and increased standards of living.

Automotive Mechanics Workshop NYS prepares Namibian Youth to become artisans in eleven occupational Areas. These programs are registered with the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) and accredited by Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA). The duration of the courses is three (3) years, with a minimum of six months on industrial job attachment. Trainees are given an opportunity to pursue their studies in one of the following occupational areas;

•   Agriculture Horticulture and Crop Production ( Level 3)
•  Agriculture Livestock Production ( Level 3)
•  Automotive Engineering (Automotive Mechanics) ( Level 3)
•  Civil & Building Services Engineering (Bricklaying) ( Level 3)
•  Manufacturing (Joinery and Cabinet Making) ( Level 3)
•  Metal Fabrication (Welding) (Level 3)
•  Business Services (Office Administration)( Level 3)
•  Civil & Building Services Engineering (Plumbing)( Level 3)
•  Beauty Services (Hairdressing)(Level 3)
•  Clothing Production (Level 4)
•  Information Communication Technology (ICT)
