SACEMA stands for The South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis. This company is known to be a national research Centre. It was established under the Centre of Excellence program of the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation.
The main focus of SACEMA is research into the patterns and development of numerous diseases. With this study SACEMA aims to understand and in time even be able to predict changes and developments as they take place within a range of different diseases. This will, in turn, assist in finding workable cures or methods of restraining a variety of diseases.
This Centre is located in Stellenbosch, its main focus at this time, yet, not excluding other epidemiological diseases, but mainly working on research and issues concerning TB, Malaria and HIV. They offer gifted student an opportunity to study into these great fields.
SACEMA BURSARIES AVAILABLE
Sacema provides candidates a variety of fields to study. Their bursaries are allocated towards achieving a PhD degree or an MSc degree. Their internal bursaries are only for candidates wishing to attend the University of Stellenbosch and their external bursary cover all other Universities within South Africa.
Their internal bursary is for candidates wishing to be based at Sacema and their studies will also be supervised by Secama. Candidates who apply for an external bursary will have to arraign with one of their Professors at the University they will be attending to act as supervisor.

- Biomedical Science
- Biostatistics
- Microbiology
- Virology
- Toxicology
- Epidemiology
- Research Data Management
Candidates must be sure that they want to pursue a career within the fields made available. Many of these fields are very demanding with high levels of stress. They may prove to be emotionally straining, as well as physical.
SACEMA BURSARY REQUIREMENTS
Bursaries provided by Sacema are awarded based to each candidate’s academic abilities, their financial need, their interest and motivation as well as their field of preference. Candidate will be required to meet the basic stipulations and those with exposure to any of the core research areas of Sacema will be given a preference.

- TB Transmission Dynamics
- HIV Incidence Estimation Methods
- HIV and TB Efficient approaches
- HIV and TB Universal Prevention and Care methods
- HIV Hyper-vulnerability in young women
- Sexual Transmission of HIV
- Silicosis, HIV & TB in mineworkers
- Water-borne Diseases
- Immunology and Treatment Resistance
- Metabolic Side-effects of Treatments
All candidates are advised to engage with the staff and researchers at Sacema to complete their applications successfully.

- Applicants must provide full academic records
- Applicants must provide proof of their need of financial aid
- Applicants must submit an acceptance letter of the University they intend to attend
- Applicants must prove their willingness to learn
- Applicants must have a passion for their field of study

SACEMA BURSARIES CLOSING DATE
Closing date for applications is usually within October / November each year. Due to the internal and external applications there are two dates but both in October. Internal applications close by the 1st of October and external applications close the end of October.\
