Admission Requirements for Graduate Programs
A candidate who wishes to enroll for the degree program within the Bellesini School of Medicine, must comply with the following admission criteria:
* A candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
* A candidate must have obtained at least 25 points according to the APS scale.
* A candidate must have obtained a minimum symbol D in English at Grade 12 level.
All students admitted to the 1st year of study who have obtained less than a (C) or (3) in the Grade-12 final examination for English, must register for the module Academic English, OR pass the WU English Exemption Benchmark test prior to commencement of the respective academic year (i.e. commencement of the Spring or Fall academic year) as proof of Academic English Proficiency;
All students admitted to the 1st year of study must register for the module Computer Literacy, OR pass the WU Computer Literacy Benchmark test prior to commencement of the respective academic year (i.e. commencement of the Spring or Fall academic year) as proof of Computer Literacy Proficiency;
All students admitted to the 1st year of study must register for the modules Study Methods (STU 101) and Critical Thinking (CRI 102);
The modules Academic English, Computer Literacy, Study Methods, and Critical Thinking, are academic prep modules and therefore not credit bearing towards the B.MedSci program of study;
All assessments within the Bellesini School of Medicine are done via online testing.
Credits earned by exam for prep-modules are reflected on the academic record of the student and a student may be exempted from having to re-do these modules in future, should such a student transfer to another program of study at WU;
Prep-modules mentioned above are bearing five (5) credits each, and these modules are offered during a period of block lectures prior to commencement of lectures reflected in the B.MedSci curriculum in order to equip all students and get them on par with their peers prior to commencement of the academic program;
Selection to the B.MedSci program is based on merit, including any aptitude tests that may be required.
Admission Requirements for Postgraduate Programs
M.MedSci Neuropsychology
The stipulations of the General Regulations and Rules apply mutatis mutandis. The Master of Medical Sciences (Neuropsychology) program is a research program with a number of compulsory modules taught online. Taught modules weigh 50% of the total number of credits, while the research component weighs 50% of the total number of credits. Applicants applying for admission to the M.MedSci (Neuropsych) program must prepare a research proposal submitted with the application for consideration. The mode of instruction of this program is online tuition with research supervision determined on the basis of individual needs.
Total number of credits: 600 credits.
M.MedSci (Own area of Specialization)
The stipulations of the General Regulations and Rules apply mutatis mutandis. The Master of Medical Sciences (own specialty) program is a research program with a number of compulsory modules taught online. Taught modules weigh 50% of the total number of credits, while the research component weighs 50% of the total number of credits. Applicants applying for admission to the M.MedSci (own specialty) program must prepare a research proposal submitted with the application for consideration. The “own specialty” candidates must note that the Masters program of study must base on the B.MedSci fourth year focus area.
The mode of instruction of this program is online tuition with research supervision determined on the basis of individual needs.
Total number of credits: 600 credits.
PhD in Medicine (Own area of Specialization)
The stipulations of the General Regulations and Rules apply mutatis mutandis. The PhD in Medicine is focused on specialization within the medical field of practice. The PhD program of study depends on the candidate’s Masters qualification in Medicine and the PhD research project must base on the prior scientific knowledge gained at Masters level. This is a research based program of study, and there are no taught modules. Applicants applying for admission to the PhD program must prepare a research proposal submitted with the application for consideration. WU may request the applicant to submit his/her Masters dissertation in PDF format for consideration of the PhD program of study.
Candidates wishing to enroll for the PhD in Medicine, must hold an M.D. professional degree, or an MBChB with a Masters degree in a field of specialization.
The mode of instruction of this program is via supervision of a research project and thesis. The majority of consultations with the supervisor will be conducted via email/internet with intermittent face-to-face contact sessions.
Total number of credits: 960 credits.
PhD in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
The stipulations of the General Regulations and Rules apply mutatis mutandis. The PhD in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is focused on specialization within the medical field of Psychiatry/Psychology. The PhD program of study depends on the candidate’s Masters qualification in Psychiatry/Psychology and the PhD research project must base on the prior scientific knowledge gained at Masters level. This is a research based program of study, and there are no taught modules. Applicants applying for admission to the PhD program must prepare a research proposal submitted with the application for consideration. WU may request the applicant to submit his/her Masters dissertation in PDF format for consideration of the PhD program of study.
Candidates wishing to enroll for the PhD in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, must hold an M.D. professional degree, or an MBChB with a Masters degree in Psychiatry, or a professional Masters degree in Psychology.

Doctor of Medicine ( MD )
Total number of credits presumed to be in place at entry level: 480
Total number of credits accumulated at exit level: 1470
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare postgraduate students to qualify as physicians. This is a stand-alone, postgraduate qualification with entry at NQA level 8 and exit at NQA level 10.
Doctoral degree: minimum of 960 credits required by SAQA and NQA at exit level
Postgraduate SAQA level 9; Postgraduate NQA level 10
Duration: minimum of five (5) academic year‘s full time study. No part-time option is available, since this is a combined postgraduate program, i.e., during the 4th and 5th years of study, students combine academic training with a full-time internship program, as follows:
Time allocation in 4th year of study (supervised internship):
Block lectures: 12 weeks (includes continuous assessment)
Clinical rotations: 34 weeks
Annual leave: 4 weeks
Final examination period: 2 weeks

Minimum contact and notional learning hours required towards degree completion:
960 SAQA / NQA credits = 9600 Notional Learning Hours = 480 lecturing hours
The MD (graduate entry) program of study exits at 1470 NQA credits.
The MD (graduate entry) program enters at Honours level 8, while the NQA and SAQA rule of access for entry to Honours degree studies is 480 credits at preceding levels.
At entry level, successful completion of the B. MedSci program may lead to admission into the graduate entry MD program of study offered at this University.
Some assessments are computerized, using security systems to ensure tamper-free assessments, some assessments take the form of an OSCE, and some assessments flow from supervised clinical work.
Rule of access to honours level program of study: The 1st year of study in the MD graduate entry program of study is equivalent to level 8 (honours degree / first professional degree). Upon entry in the 1st year of study, candidates must have already acquired a minimum of 480 credits through prior undergraduate study, e.g. completion of a B. MedSci or B. Sc degree (3-year) degree to be admitted to honours level postgraduate studies.
Rule of access to Master’s level program of study: The 2nd and 3rd years of study in the MD graduate entry program of study are equivalent to level 9 (master‘s degree level). Upon entry to the 2nd year of study, candidates must have already acquired a minimum of 600 credits through a combination of prior undergraduate study and successful completion of the 1st year of the MD graduate entry program of study, e.g. completion of a B. MedSci or B. Sc degree (3-year) degree, PLUS successful completion of the 1st year of MD studies to be admitted to Master‘s level postgraduate studies.
Rule of access to Doctoral level program of study: The 4th and 5th years of study in the MD graduate entry program of study are equivalent to level 10 (doctoral degree level). Upon entry to the 4th year of study, candidates must have already acquired a minimum of 720 credits through a combination of prior undergraduate study and successful completion of the first three (3) years of the MD graduate entry program of study, e.g. completion of a B. MedSci or B. Sc degree (3-year) degree, PLUS successful completion of the first three (3) years of MD studies to be admitted to Doctoral level postgraduate studies.
This program is a sandwich program of study, and the candidate must also adhere to the rules and regulations governing medical education in the host country/university. Tuition fees are calculated at the rates set by the host universities and payable directly to the host university by the candidate.
PhD Neuroscience
The stipulations of the General Regulations and Rules apply mutatis mutandis. The PhD in Neuroscience is focused on specialization within the neuroscience field of practice. The PhD program of study depends on the candidate’s Masters qualification in Medicine and the PhD research project must base on the prior scientific knowledge gained at Masters level. This is a research based program of study, and there are no taught modules. Applicants applying for admission to the PhD program must prepare a research proposal submitted with the application for consideration. Candidates wishing to enroll for the PhD in Neuroscience, must hold a Master’s degree in a medical or allied medical sciences field.
