1 UNAM Wildlife Management and Ecotourism Department

Department of Wildlife Management is the youngest department in the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources and has been established on 1 January 2013 on the Katima Mulilo Campus. Its main mission is to conduct research on wildlife in the KAZA region and teaching in wildlife ecology and ecotourism. It currently offers B.Sc. (Hons.) in Wildlife Management and Ecotourism. The Department also manages its own game reserves (2500 ha) in the Kalahari Woodland, c. 20 km from the KM campus.
Research areas in the Department currently includes:

Quantitative studies on avian assemblages (species composition, population densities, dominance structure, habitat selection etc.) in all vegetation types and some of their microhabitats in Namibia.
Population dynamics and habitat selection of ungulates in some national parks (Waterberg, Etosha, Malimi, Bwabwata, Chobe, Makgadigadi, Nxai), game reserves (Mahango, Moremi) and conservancies in the Zambezi Region.
Monitoring numbers of hippos, crocodiles and large water birds on Zambezi River between Katima and Impalila and in the Lake Lyambezi (by hoover boat).
Diet analysis of selected vertebrate species (Elephant, Hippo, Buffalo, Carmine Bee-eater, White-fronted Bee-eater, Barn Owl, African Pike).
Ectoparasites of vertebrates (ticks, lice, mites, tapeworms, nematodes).
Biodiversity research in the Zambezi Region (Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Arachnida, water macro invertebrates).
