The UCT HIV-TB Immunology Group – a group of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) is inviting applications from suitably qualified South African students for a postdoctoral fellowship.
The successful applicant will be involved in conducting research within the two areas that the lab focuses on, namely investigating cellular mechanisms contributing to the development of broadly neutralizing antibodies in HIV infection, as well as studying HIV-TB co-infection, and how HIV affects the immune response to TB.
The aim of the fellowship is to provide financial help to South African students.
The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university located in Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is jointly the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest extant university in Sub-Saharan Africa alongside Stellenbosch.
Course Level: Fellowship is available to pursue Postdoctoral programme.
Study Subject: Fellowship is awarded in the UCT HIV-TB Immunology Group – a group of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM), UCT.
Scholarship Award: The value of the fellowship is R 220,000 to R 275,000 per annum (dependent on experience) and an application will be made to SARS for tax-exemption by the University on behalf of the successful candidate.

Eligibility: The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD in immunology or related area
  • Relevant experience in an immunology laboratory, including working with clinical samples
  • Experience in advanced flow cytometry
  • Good organization and management skills
  • Knowledge of HIV and TB would be desirable
  • Computer literacy and a good breadth of data and statistical analysis tools

Entrance Requirements: Candidates must have obtained their PhD degree within 5 years and have not held any permanent academic or professional posts.
